A media and money election?
I wanted to weigh in on a couple of things about the election that I think are important.  First of all I am saddened that our democratic system has now ABSOLUTELY been turned over to the media and money and not the general population. It’s quite obvious our presidency is now following the way of the political trends we have seen here in NJ over the past few years.  In our state we had both...

The power of influence
In 1768 a Christian minister named John Witherspoon became president of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton. While there he taught biblical principles of government to his students. Of the 478 young men who were graduated during his tenure, writes author John Eidsmoe, “114 became ministers; 13 were state governors; 3 were U. S. Supreme Court judges; 20 were U.S. Senators; 33 were U. S....

Something to think about?
OK - here’s the deal with the election at hand let’s unlock the door of our closed minds and consider the following… Let’s get this out of the way up front: I’m not a politically motivated person. Which is why I felt a tad out of place meeting with Barack Obama this summer. And talking to John McCain. And doing countless interviews about the faith and shifting political views of...

Bridal Song
This morning I did something I’ve never done before.  I read the entire book of Song of Solomon in one setting.  Now, not that it’s an amazing accomplishment - after all it’s only eight chapters - but I was amazed at how when you read it all the way through how it flows and how you get such a great slant on the message and the drama being played out throug Solomon’s...

Ecclesiastes - good advise...
My personal devotion time in this book has been rich as I have worked my way through the brain-twisters of each passage.  Of course often Solomon was speaking from a worldly point of view (he calls vanity; or things under the sun) so you have to be careful to discern whether his statements are of the world or of God which he also brings out at certain points throughout the book. But this morning...

Nothing new under the sun!
OK - so I have been reading Ecclesiastes and it’s working on my head!  Here’s why… The key word in this book is the word - “vanity”.  A good Biblical definition of vanity is, “the futile emptiness of trying to be happy apart from God”.  I like that… and it’s true.  And yet try as we might we find ourselves like Solomon chasing the winds of...

Coming up EMPTY
This morning I arose knowing it’s missions convention weekend in our church and Donna and I would be making a faith promise to God concerning our finances for world harvest. During my prayer time I found myself reading through Ecclesiastes chapter one and something stuck strong in my spirit.  It was the words from chapter 1 verse 15 - “what is crooked cannot be made straight”.   ...

Back Update
Hey friends - thanks for all the prayers this past week.  Once again my church really stepped it up.  Being missions week it was super busy… but with the help of staff and prayer from the Healing Room… and then the angels God sent my way… alias - Joe Licitra and Tony Ram - I made it through.  Exactly one week ago to this minute I was at the ER - absolutely unable to function....

No Reserves - No Retreats - No Regrets
Yesterday in our first service at Bethany Howard Foltz reminded us of the story of William Borden the young man who started the Student youth missionary movement in the early 20th century while a student at Yale.  To be honest with you even this morning I am still “reverberating” in my spirit as I think about the story.  I have included in this blog a link below where you can read a...

Prophetic? I hope not!
Did you happen to catch the funny - but also scary mistake in the upstate NY absentee ballots that where sent out?  Instead of listing Barak Obama - they listed Barak Osama… isn’t that kind of like Osama Bin-Laden?   Now stuff like that scares me.  As a matter of fact the whole election scares me… as a matter of fact… the course of our nation scares me.  But let’s...

Capitalism or capitolism... I weigh in
Of course I have been watching this economic woe with everyone else - but I think I want to weigh in on this.  Because no one likes long blogs I will keep this short.  But we keep reading about the crashing of our system of capitalism  (see link)… however, in my humble opinion we have not been involved in real capitalism in a long time.  Actually, for years we have been involved in  much...

Ok gang, this blog is for info but also personal pleas as well - so just to let you all know I could use a little prayer after ending up in the ER Monday for a bad back that seized up and after an MRI I found I have a couple of ruptured discs…soooo, how about a bit of prayer for ol Pastor Don?  I also have a small tear in one of the discs so I have been referred to a...

Jim Elliott
One of the most talked about martyrs in the 20th century has been the missionaries in Ecuador in the 1950’s.  My friend Mike Olejarz  has written a nice little article on one of their lives Jim Elliot - good, inspiring read… enjoy. If you looked around the middle part of the 20th century for an All-American young man, you may have run into Jim Elliott. Born and raised in Portland,...

South Africa Team Wrap-up
Well it’s Friday October 3 here in South Africa and we have made it to our hotel by the airport.  We leave this evening… all are ready to head home… we’re exhausted- but thrilled to be here and able to witness God’s Wonder in both the Crusade and then on the amazing Safari! As I noted a couple of days ago, the crusade ended with well over 2000 being saved and scores...
