Sons of Shepherds and Truck Drivers
For the last several days I have been once again reading through 1 and 2 Samuel and enjoying gleaning insights from the life of King David. I love the way the Bible presents him as such an incredible superstar and yet so human and fallible. These amazing books trace his almost every step and show both his ups and of course his downs. Yesterday as I read from 2 Samuel 6-8… I love the part where he has now been made king over all of Israel - but the Lord stops to remind him that He has brought him from the hills of Bethlehem and being the son of shepherd to the place of king. But what’s cool is David doesn’t miss the lesson and expresses his awe at such a thing. It made me wonder… where has God people like you and me from?
Well, allow me to let you in on a little secret I have had with the Lord for a long time. Maybe it will help you reflect as well. Many years ago God reminded me I’m simply the son of a truckdriver who himself was the son of a chicken rancher. But like David, God has been so wonderfully gracious to me. The Lord and I have this little “thing” we share with each other. Every time he affords me some amazing opportunity or blessing I say to him, “Thanks Lord for another ‘just the son of a truckdriver experience!” I’m talking about those things I don’t derserve and most of the time can hardly imagine God has not only allowed but arranged.
It happened when I was able to help at Ground Zero after 9/11, and later in Indonesia after the Tsunami and again in New Orleans after Katrina blew through town. It happened when I entered thr Pyramids, climbed the Acropolis, prayed at the Wailing Wall, walked on the Great Wall and a couple of weeks ago wacked the golf ball down the fairway at Pebble Beach.
I mean who am I that I should get to do all of this… and why would I even have the chance? Well I don’t deserve it any more than David deserved to be king. It’s just the he and I connected with the same powerful and amazing God! The God who takes sons of shepherds and sons of truckdrivers and puts them in places they could never ever imagine or arrange on their own.
So how about you fellow-blogite… whose son or daughter are you?
