No Reserves - No Retreats - No Regrets
Yesterday in our first service at Bethany Howard Foltz reminded us of the story of William Borden the young man who started the Student youth missionary movement in the early 20th century while a student at Yale. To be honest with you even this morning I am still “reverberating” in my spirit as I think about the story. I have included in this blog a link below where you can read a short recap of his life.
But this young man who was born into great wealth through his aristocrat family in Chicago - gave all his wealth away for the cause of missions and in doing so he wrote in his Bible flyleaf…. NO RESERVES! Then he decided to study and give his whole life to being a missionary… his family was totally confused- he could have lived his life in comfort and worldly success… but when confronted about it… he stuck to his convictions and followed his calling… as he did he wrote again in his Bible - this time … NO RETREATS!
Finally after going to Yale and Princeton (not bad) for his education - it was there he started the student missionary movement… he finally left for the mission field and China. On the way he stopped in Egypt to learn some Arabic where at age 25 he was stricken by spinal meningitis and died. When his family later recovered the body and his Bible had been laid with it - they discovered he had added one more sentence to his prior entires - this time he had added - NO REGRETS.
Oh my does that challenge me this morning. How about you? The Apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonian believers that we are “to make the most of every opportunity”.
Lord let it be so for me and my family and my friends.
